A coach that pushes back
Not a yes-machine. Your coach knows your fatigue, your ramp, and your race date — and coaches like it.
Athlete: Coach, I'm feeling strong this week. Can we swap Thursday's easy ride for VO2 intervals? My 70.3 is in six weeks and I want to push.
Coach: I hear you, Maya — but I'm going to push back on this one. Your form is at −18 and your resting heart rate has been elevated three mornings in a row. You've already absorbed a big ramp; stacking VO2 work on top of that fatigue doesn't build fitness — it buries it.
Athlete: Hmm. I just don't want to lose my top end before race day.
Coach: Six weeks out, your top end isn't the risk — arriving flat is. Here's my counter-offer: Thursday stays aerobic, 90 minutes Z2 with 4×20-second cadence bursts to keep the legs snappy. If your HRV and legs rebound over the weekend, we run the full VO2 set on Tuesday — fresh enough to actually hit the watts.
Athlete: Okay, that's fair. Let's do it your way.
Coach: Done — Thursday is updated, and the VO2 session is pencilled in for Tuesday, pending how you recover. Good call, Maya. Fitness is built by the week, not by one Thursday.
